INCREASE TRANSPERENCY

Increase transparency: is when factories are kept in a dungeon from the public so they can maintain a type of barrier from their consumers. In the 2002 farm bill, a section titled "Privacy OF Personal Information Relating to Natural Resources Conservation Programs." were issues to maintain private what goes on inside the CAFO. My question is what do they have to hide? CAFOs should be open to the public. SEE JENNIFER'S BLOG FOR MORE DETAIL!

In class Bibliography

"Even President Theodore Roosevelt seemed to be more shocked by the details of how cattle and hogs were being sliced into beef and pork--and by how much condemned meat was ending up on American dinner tables--than by the workers' plight(Ewer)."

This is relevant to my writing because its an example of the cruelty that is being done to these harmless animal, and how the government has been aware of it for a while now and still allow it. I also like this quote because of the example that the writer uses to show that the government did not care about the workers conditions.

Blog #2

In the book Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser, he exposes the dark side of companies. Schlosser states that "Most of the nonunion workers are illegal immigrants; many are illegals; and they generally employed "at will." That means they can be fired without a cause or for just any reason. Such and arrangement does not encourage them to lodge complaints" (Schlosser 174). This quote is stating that many unionized workers were immigrants that have been employed just because they need the job and they would risk themselves getting hurt in the job. So for the fact that they're immigrants they will fire them if they have any complaint, that's why these union workers that are immigrants keep everything to themselves because they don't want to risk their job. I believe that this is a contradiction for the fact that most likely the head of the union might have persuaded them into joining the union, also making it seem as if likely they cared about them. In other words if the immigrants complain then they are at risk in getting fired. The fact that the head of the unions are even promising things that they know they wouldn't even do is unfair to me because their are workers that are willing to risk themselves.

Summary: Corporation and Advertisement

In the reading, “Fast Food Nation” chapter 2 Eric Schlosser discusses many tactics that corporations use to advertise. Aiming their advertisement towards kids has made Disney World and McDonalds tremendous profits. Schlosser discusses marketing schemes and the synergy strategy. Which is when a company sells the right to use their name or product to increase product recognition. Since Disney World is so expensive to go to, a parent feels a lot better with there kid when they take them to McDonalds because they bring them a little closer to the magic of Disney. This promotes Disney and McDonalds at the same time. Young Kids ask their parents to take them to McDonalds and spend money, while at the same time being brained washed that McDonalds is their “Trusted Friend”. Schlosser effectively demonstrates how fast food companies, which offer little in terms of nutrition, manipulate young minds in an effort to sell their products. These companies go so far as to portray themselves as trusted friends and prey on school with low funds to sell and advertise their product. McDonalds created Play Land to attract kids to come and have fun, just as Disney does with their Rides and main attractions. Both these companies target insecure working class parents to trust in them as if they were their friends.
